Tuna, Marlin & Snapper Fishing...with a Woodchipper!

This week sees Matt targeting a couple of New Zealand’s most underutilized fish species; the skipjack and albacore tuna. Whilst attempting to demonstrate the versatility of these under-appreciated fish, the team are pestered by packs of pesky marlin, and come across some gigantic schools of balling baitfish which have to be seen to be believed.

And after hooking onto a shoal of big hapuku, the focus then changes to capturing footage rather than fish, as we see the first ever deployment of some pioneering new technology with deep drop cam - a baited camera which can be dropped into the deep dark depths. However, a big mako threatens to ruin plans by trying to eat the camera!

A competition to find a fan of The ITM Fishing Show to come along on a trip resulted in Bevan, a landscaper from Te Awamutu, joining the crew on a mission to one of New Zealand's greatest fishing grounds, the legendary Ranfurly Banks. Under Matt's tutelage, Bev hopes to knock off a few firsts and set some new PB's along the way. There's wall to wall action, plenty of tips and loads of fun.

The surface and underwater displays these fish put on for the cameras is unbelievable - watch as Matt swims with, and hand-feeds 300 kilo giant tunas!

Catching a giant bluefin tuna is tough even on the very best big game fishing tackle, but on a hand line it is not only tough, but dangerous. We stay at an uninhabited atoll in the middle of the south pacific ocean, sharks sea turtles and sea snakes all visit us in the night, and by day we get hooked up and dealt to by some of the hardest pulling fish we’ve ever encountered at an offshore seamount.
